AMPLINEX M09

image
AMPLINEX issue M09 was published in January 1989. Each AMPLINEX magazine is stored as a 200K single-sided 80-track disk image file (.ssd file type). The image can be used to create disks for a BBC Micro or can be loaded into a BBC emulator. For the disks to run, the BBC (real or emulated) must have an AMPLE Nucleus ROM installed and be running the Hybrid Music System.

The Underworld Procession

by Les Pearce

As a newcomer to the AMPLE environment this is my first attempt at bringing together the "building blocks" of the language to form a complete self-written piece.

I hope that it will be well received by both other beginners and those more proficient.

Programmed and edited via Notepad on a Music 5000/BBC B, after my initial "inspiration" brought about arpeggios on the Music 4000 keyboard.

Thanks to Pilgrim Beart for 'susped' and other very useful AMPLE ideas.

Theme

by Bruce Goatly

The melody for this dates back to 1964, the piano arrangement to Feb. 1970. Being only a very inaccurate pianist, when I bought a Music 500 system I leapt at the chance to translate this, one of my favourite own pieces, into a form I could listen to without having to suffer my own errors and dragooning someone else into playing the solo part. Upgrading it for the Studio 5000 was a problem because I had defined a very pleasant "soft piano" instrument that I couldn't find a way of making on the 5000. So I settled for good ol' Upright. But "mix1" is fun.

Seeing You Again

by Tim Sketchley

Player 1 plays the tune on voice 1, along with weak jazzy chords on voices 2 and 3. 2ins plays a two-note chord, with constant pitch on channel 1, channel 2 playing the notes in the score. At the end, 7 voices play a 7-part ending and bassins is still present so it is not cut off sharply from the previous section.

VERSE 1
Oh you know that I would like to see you again.
It's the time of my life that I don't want to end.
When I'm away from you I feel like crying,
When I'm away from you I feel like dying,
You know that I love you, I always will

VERSE 2
And you know that I do miss you ever so much.
And I know that you have got that magical touch.
There is one thing that you've just got to know,
You are the one that I just won't let go.
'Cos I've always loved you, I always will.

Sabrina

This is a journey into, eh…

She hit.
She did.
I hit.
She hit.
We hit.
We did.
Yo! Hit! (5x)

Revs

by Jim Redfarn

In this short piece, I tried to capture the excitement at the start of a motor race. Despite the rather unmusical sounds, I initially wrote all of the parts on the Staff editor of the Music 5000.

Overture to the Messiah

by Jeff Turnbull

Composed by: G F Handel

This has been produced by using and adapting the score of the original. This is one of several different "Messiah" pieces which I have produced on the Music 5000. I had some difficulty at the mix change, to avoid breaks in the music. I finally found a method which worked. Perhaps others can improve on this.

Just for the Asking

The dress is red, tight and short. The sun is hot as she slowly walks down the Boulevard. Is the Lady...

JUST FOR THE ASKING

Or maybe the cost is...

Jig in G

by Graham F Firth

Composed by: Thomas Arne

From Sonata number 4

Some years ago, a Roland Emmett machine was installed in a glass case in one of the aisles of a local shopping centre. Every hour this machine was run to the sound of a very catchy tune. Since then I have often wondered what that tune was. One day, a friend gave me the dots for it, together with a cassette of a recording of the tune itself that he had made (very self-consciously standing around waiting for the tune to start!). This is my version of that tune - at the same speed as that recording & sounding a lot like it. I hope that it doesn't offend any purists!

Clair de Lune

by Gerry Timm

Composed by: Claude Debussy

'Clair de Lune' was one of the first pieces that I attempted and it is a good exAMPLE of how not to do things!

It was first of all arranged with just the piano voices, section by section, faults in the scoring were rectified, and by then there was a shortage of free memory. Introducing more instruments prevented use of the Staff editor and some of the parts were too big for Notepad.

This version is almost beyond further editing. If starting again I would write short parts, use fewer mixes, and call instruments from parts. Someone may find it of interest; I've enjoyed the challenge.
